Born in the valley of Kashmir
For centuries the valley of Kashmir has been home to some of the finest textile crafts in the world: pashmina spun from Himalayan fibre, shawls woven on wooden looms, and silk carpets knotted by hand. Knots & Thread works with artisan families in the valley who keep these crafts alive, and brings their work to the Gulf and beyond.
Three crafts, one standard
From the high plateau to your hands
Fibre
Pashmina is combed by hand from the Changthangi goat of the Himalayan high plateau.
Spinning
The fibre is spun on a traditional wooden wheel into a fine, even yarn.
Weaving & knotting
Shawls are woven on wooden handlooms. Carpets are knotted one knot at a time, read from the talim, the weaver's coded pattern.
Finishing
Each piece is painted, embroidered or washed, then checked by hand before it leaves the workshop.
